Following the call on Dredge masters by a team of engineers from the engineering department of VRA to dredge the two oxidation ponds, the team from VRA in the meeting after a joint site inspection, informed the DML team that, after preliminary assessment of available monitoring data and echo sounding data, it was realised that the sludge buildup in the ponds exceed one third of the total capacity of the pond.
This has contributed significantly to the poor performance of both ponds. Due to this, the discharged water that flows into the lake is highly polluted and it is likely to affect the downstream users along the lake who use the lake for several activities.
In order to fix this challenge, there is a need to dredge the sludge buildup in the pond and the water treated and allowed to flow back into the Volta Lake. According to a report generated by the engineering department of VRA, The Akosombo Oxidation ponds were constructed in 1983 to treat the wastewater from the Akosombo Township (community 1& 2) but since its construction, there has not been any maintenance dredging.
The system is made up of two ponds i.e. Pond 1, which is 71456m2 and Pond 2 which is also 21900m2 and the design lifespan of the pond was 30years for a projected population of 30,000
