The Djange Lagoon in Ningo – Prampram, located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, comprises a shallow lagoon system interconnected with the Atlantic Ocean. Serving as a dividing line between the old and new Ningo Township, a bridge spans over the lagoon towards the estuary, where it eventually meets the sea.

The Djanle Lagoon contains a mix of saltwater and freshwater. It is an important wetland habitat for many species of birds, fish, and other aquatic creatures.

The morphology of the Djanle Lagoon is characterized by a narrow , winding channel that connects the lagoon to the ocean. The channel is subject to sedimentation and erosion, which has affected the water level and salinity of the lagoon.

The surrounding mangrove forests around the lagoon, which plays an important role in protecting the shoreline from erosion and storm surges, have been destroyed as a result of deforestation.

The dredging of the Djanle Lagoon is to cover an area with a length of 1500m ( of which 1200m is towards the land side and 300m towards the sea ) and with a width of 104m and a depth of 2.5m.

In general, the dredging works on the Djanle Lagoon are necessary for various reasons, including

i. Enhanced Navigation and Accessibility: Clearing the lagoon of sedimentation and obstructions facilitates smoother navigation for boats and vessels, ensuring safe and efficient transportation.

ii. Flood Control: Dredging helps to alleviate flooding risks by improving the lagoon’s drainage capacity, thus reducing the likelihood of inundation during heavy rainfall or storm events.

iii. Ecosystem Restoration: Removing sediment buildup and restoring natural hydrological conditions contribute to the revival of the lagoon’s ecosystem, supporting biodiversity and ecological balance.

iv. Water Quality Improvement: Dredging aids in the removal of pollutants and sediments, leading to improved water quality within the lagoon, which is beneficial for both aquatic life and human activities.

v. Economic Benefits: A dredged and well-maintained lagoon enhances economic activities such as fishing, tourism, and transportation, thereby fostering local livelihoods and contributing to socio-economic development.
